Dr. Melissa deCardi Hladek is an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and a researcher-clinician focusing on how stress, self-efficacy, and sociocultural factors influence the biology of aging, chronic disease, and frailty. Her research goals are to further understand these factors and develop novel strengths-based, person-environment strategies and policies to mitigate these effects and center the patient's voice in modern health care. Dr. Hladek is the lead NP in the national effort to disseminate patient priorities care to NP clinicians and students throughout the nation. Dr. Hladek also works with the PPC national team in overall dissemination and Spanish translation efforts. Her research incorporates PPC principles and is funded through NIDDK, NIA, and the Hartford Foundation for two interventions in person-environment optimization and digital literacy. Dr. Hladek maintains a clinical practice with a primarily Spanish-speaking community at Esperanza Center in Baltimore, Maryland. She teaches both DNP and PhD students. She is the president for the National Association of Hispanic Nurses-DC Metro Chapter and advisor for the Latinx Health Advocacy Group at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.
